Tamba4F8D.jpgTOKYO.  One of Japan’s top actors, Tetsuro Tamba, who died last week at the age of 84, is best known in the West for his starring role alongside Sean Connery in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice. But in recent years, as well as continuing to act in movies, he became a medium, wrote books and made documentaries about the next world, and headed the organisation Dai Reien Kai (Great Spirit World). Read More

British television viewers, and others able to view BBC4, were treated to “Fear of Fanny”, a dramatisation of the life and loves of one of the first TV cooks, Fanny Cradock, on Monday 23 October. It introduced a whole new audience to the delightful eccentric (she often wore a ball gown during her cooking demonstrations) who dominated British TV cookery from the 1950s to the mid-1970s. British biologist and parapsychologist Rupert Sheldrake was one of the scientists whose theories about animal homing instincts were put to the test by Five TV in its “Stranger Than Fiction” series (25 October). Academics from the universities of Frankfurt, Pisa and Oxford put forward competing theories. But, since this was television entertainment rather than a scientific investigation, things were not exactly as they seemed, and the results reflected that.
