Thai PM will return, says astrologer

BANGKOK. Two weeks before the bloodless military coup that toppled him from power, Thailand’s prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, phoned an astrologer for advice.

The man he consulted, Phra Khru Wichitsuthakarn, the 64-year-old abbot of Wat Khang Khao, or “Bat Temple”, two hours north of Bangkok, says:

“I warned him before the coup to be careful, there will be enemies who want to attack you but they won’t kill or hurt you. After this period, be careful of the revolution.”

The coup wasn’t exactly unexpected. There had been accusations of corruption against the prime minister for many months and when he held an election the opposition refused to stand against him. So the abbot’s predictions are not impressive.

But his prediction for Thaksin Shinawatra’s future is unexpected. He says “the bad influence” against him will wane from 16 April 2007 “and he will be the prime minister again”.

Gen Sonthi Boonyaratglin, the coup leader, is also reported to believe in astrology – as do most Thais – and to have consulted the abbot two years earlier.
