Decision time for ISF

EASTBOURNE. When the Executive Committee of the International Spiritualist Federation (ISF) holds its biennial meetings tomorrow and Wednesday (10 and 11 June) in England it will need to confront some very serious issues.

The once-respected organisation has suffered a series of resignations by some of its leading figures as well as the departure from membership or affiliation of a number of Spiritualist societies.

Their reasons for departure are varied, ranging from the way in which the federation is run to the claim that some decisions are taken without consulting the membership.

This dissatisfaction has reached a peak, however, with the imprisonment of its former president, Mervyn Johnson (Wright), for serious sexual offences that occurred when he was giving healing to a young girl.

Many ISF members are appalled that the federation has not taken away Johnson’s life membership. It has also decided to hold its next Congress in Sweden – the country in which the offences were committed and where Johnson is now imprisoned. This decision appears to be an astonishing gesture of support for a man who has disgraced the ISF and the Spiritualist movement.

Sweeping changes are necessary if the ISF is to regain its tarnished reputation. Failure to do so could ultimately result in the disintegration of an organisation with an illustrious past and a tremendous potential for good in a troubled world.
