Buddhist lama reborn into MySpace

Karmapa.jpgLONDON. The 17th Karmapa Trinlay Thaye Dorje – also known as the Black Hat Lama of Tibet – has joined the social networking phenomenaon MySpace, and gave an “e-blessing” to the British public via a video on the Internet site, before his UK visit earlier this month.

The 24-year-old, whom Buddhists believe is the 17th reincarnation of the leader of the Karma Kagyu tradition – one of four main branches of the religion – reveals in his blog that he’s a high tech lama with modern tastes.

When he’s not studying Buddhist texts or conducting rituals, the Karmapa reveals, he likes to sketch, walk or watch cricket and action movies: especially Spiderman 3. He also plays on his Playstation3, surfs the Internet, enjoys the Simpsons on TV and likes to eat pizza.

And his musical taste ranges from Mozart and Beethoven to Eagle Eye Cherry and Black Eyed Peas.

His e-blessing must be the first that has been given in the 2,500 history of Tibetan Buddhism.

His visit to London was part of a 12-week European tour, taking in six countries, to meet and teach his students.

You can find more information about the Karmapa at his official site or at his MySpace page.
