French open all their secret UFO files

 PARIS. France has become the first country to open all of its 1,600 once-secret files on UFOs (known as OVNIs in French) to the public. Instead of responding only to requests about specific reports under freedom of information legislation, as a few other Western countries do, France’s national space agency has decided to make everything available on a dedicated website. Interest has been so great that the website has become overloaded and is difficult to access. In going public, the French have also revealed that a quarter of their sightings, going back over 50 years, contain good data but remain unexplained. Read More

Did Spiritualists murder Houdini?

 UNITED STATES. An extraordinary claim that illusionist and escapologist Harry Houdini may have been murdered by Spiritualists is being taken seriously by his great nephew and others. George Hardeen, whose grandfather was Houdini’s brother, Theodore, is arranging to have Houdini’s remains exhumed so that pathologists can explore whether Houdini – who received tremendous publicity for his anti-Spiritualist performances – was poisoned, rather than dying from peritonitis, following a punch to his stomach that ruptured his appendix, as indicated on his death certificate. Challenge solved: ‘Randi owes me $1 million’

 UNITED STATES. Arch sceptic James Randi’s most recent stunt to “disprove” the existence of paranormal powers has sensationally failed. As part of his $1 million offer to the first person to provide him with convincing, testable proof of supernatural powers, Randi had set up a remote viewing challenge involving the contents of a special sealed box held at his educational foundation’s offices in Florida. But cryptographer Matt Blaze (right) and a colleague have correctly identified the object inside the box as a DVD or CD and – tongue in cheek – have told Randi that either a money order or certified cheque for $1 million will be acceptable. The 34-year-old movie star became a superstar by starring in more than a dozen films in six years, including an impressive debut in The Mask opposite Jim Carrey, and a notable hit in the comedy There’s Something About Mary opposite Ben Stiller. Enfield poltergeist lives again

 UNITED KINGDOM. It is 30 years since the “Enfield poltergeist” hit the headlines, but it is still an event that haunts those who experienced it. As well as the Hodgson family, who were at the centre of this paranormal outbreak in their north London home, witnesses included police officers, journalists and a photographer, a physicist, and two of the Society for Psychical Research’s leading investigators.
